CRUISE IN FOR A FESTIVAL OF VROOM

- SHANE FOWLES

AFTER announcing himself as a rising star on the national scene, Ocean Grove’s Zac Soutar is now focusing on a flagship event much closer to home.

The 21-year-old will be competing at this weekend’s Geelong Revival Motoring Festival, which features more than 400 competition cars and bikes and more than 500 on display. The small

family- run team will also be supporting Zac’s father Shane, a former national sidecar champ who has raced in Europe.

Zac will be on the starter’s line for the prestigious Quarter Mile Sprints, which have been held on the city’s waterfront since 1956.

He is coming off a breakthrough season where he finished third in the Australian Formula Ford Championship.

His memorable season was highlighted by a race and round win at Sandown, with podium placings at Phillip Island, and in Queensland and South Australia.

The former Christian College student said the overall result was unexpected and has fuelled his passion to race cars professionally.

“The dream is definitely to become a professional racing car driver.

“I’ve always had a passion for categories such as the Supercars Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup here in Australia.

“I would definitely love to try my hand at something like

that given the opportunity.”

When not competing, Zac’s Formula Ford will be on display Saturday and Sunday. It will be among a throng of classic cars, motorcycles and retro caravans taking pride of place along the waterfront.

The festival, which opens on Friday night, will also feature come-and-try experiences and vintage fashion competitions.
