Our top gun turns sights on a bigger stage
GEELONG clay shooter Blake Nankervis will set his sights on the international stage after prevailing at the Australian Sporting Clay Nationals at Laang, east of Warrnambool.
Nankervis, 29, is one of five in the Australian men’s team selected to compete at the International Clay Target Shooting Federation (ICTSF) world championship in Ireland in July as part of a busy travelling schedule in the next 12 months.
“I’ve got a lot of travelling around, doing smaller events with selection shoots, but I’ve got an Oceania championship in Brisbane over Easter next year, and I’ll be heading over to Ireland for a world championship and then straight across a week after that to England for a world championship,” he said.
Nankervis prevailed by one shot at the Laang outdoor event last weekend, just weeks after falling short in another national attempt.
“I’ve won a number of national junior titles and one open national title as well, but it was nine years ago, so it was a fair gap,” he said.
“I have won a number of other major events amongst that as well, but it’s always nice to get a big one like that.
“All the best in Australia were there so it’s a good opportunity to gauge yourself against those guys.
“I shot another national championship two weeks ago where I came equal first and you go into a playoff and I got beaten in that and came second, so it was nice to go into this one and pull it off.”
