St John ready for scrap

- ALEX OATES BOXING

RISING Geelong boxer Che St John says he is confident of extending his professional win streak to five tomorrow night.

St John, of St Albans Park, will meet Samoan-born Melburnian Mafa Telepe at Malvern Town Hall.

The heavyweight scrap is part of the Peter Maniatis Events-Hosking Promotions card.

St John is unbeaten in four bouts, while Telepe is on a four-fight skid.

“He’s a tall, awkward, strong opponent, so it will be a good test for me,” he said.

“We’ve watched a couple of his fights. He likes to swing wild when he’s pressured, so obviously we’ve got to counteract that and work off the jab.”

Having defeated West Australian Hayden Wright via unanimous decision back in September, St John said his confidence levels were sky high.

“We’ve had a good camp and we’ve been training hard and working on a lot of things, so I’m very confident I can get the job done,” he said.

“Being the tough competitor that he is, it will be a tough fight, but I believe I can get the win on Saturday night.”

Standing 188cm, Telepe will pose problems for St John.

But the former Brisbanebased brawler has the blueprint to overcome Telepe.

“He doesn’t really like it when you’re on the inside of him,” St John said.

“He’s stronger on the outside, being a taller opponent, so if I can get in and do the work inside, I think he’ll have trouble.”
