Cats’ WA draft pick a ‘steal’: expert

FOOTBALL expert David King has described Geelong’s recruitment of Jordan Clark at pick 15 in last night’s draft as “a steal”.

The 18-year-old dual-sport Western Australian has taken a hat-trick for Australia against Pakistan at under-age level, but was labelled by King as a ready-made footballer who can slot into Geelong’s backline from Round 1 next year.

Clark, 185cm and 81kg, also quashed any fears of a gohome factor, telling Fox Footy he was hoping for a start in Victoria.

“I’m stoked. Originally I wanted to get to Melbourne, so I’m stoked with that outcome,” Clark said.

“Obviously leaving home is going to be hard but I’m stoked. I like the idea of playing Melbourne.”

King described Geelong’s selection of Clark as “a ripper”.

“That’s a steal for Geelong; they’ve done it again,” King said.

“He’ll play football, I’ve got no doubt, next year because I just think he’s ready-made.

“Tom Hawkins is probably the biggest beneficiary of this; he’s a destination kicker. He kicks the ball where the forward is likely to arrive — never on top of his head, never makes the forward stand and deliver.

“I love that he’s got that extra five metres penetration on his kick than most players.”

The Claremont rebounding defender was selected in the under-18 All-Australian team and was named WA’s most valuable player at the national carnival.
