Clash to deny some big names an Addy Cup berth

- ALEX OATES

A CLASH of schedules is set to deny Geelong’s elite cricketers the chance to suit up in the Geelong Advertiser T20 Cup.

Angus Boyd, Jake Reed and Hayden Butterworth won’t return to their clubs tonight as they compete in other competitions.

Boyd and Butterworth will represent Geelong in the Vic Super Slam in its maiden Geelong appearance, while Reed was drafted into Victoria’s Futures League squad.

That means Boyd won’t line-up for Newtown & Chilwell, Reed won’t play for Grovedale and Butterworth will be missing from Leopold’s side for Round 3 of the Addy Cup.

Geelong City captain Richie Oliver won’t have to make a call on whether to line-up with his beloved Sharks or Geelong, with City having a bye.

“If there was a game for us (City) this week I probably would’ve played for Geelong because we’re already out of the competition,” he said.

Both City and Newtown & Chilwell qualified for the Regional Big Bash, but neither club has been notified of the times and dates of the fixture.

After securing victories in its opening two Vic Super Slam matches, Geelong will host Carlton tonight.

The Cats will be without captain Eamonn Vines, who joins speedster Reed in the second XI clash against Tasmania.

In the Addy Cup, Newtown & Chilwell faces a must-win Pool A clash against Leopold.

The Two Blues have made two changes to the two-day outfit that downed Grovedale, with Yves Roussety and Harry Christie replacing Jack Royce (omitted) and George Chis- holm (work commitments).

Newtown coach Dev Royce revealed the GCA had denied his club’s request play another marquee player in Boyd’s absence.

“We’ve already been told that we can’t chop and change our marquee player,” Royce said.

“So I presume that rule will apply and there won’t be any new marquee players pop up for other clubs.”
