Art and soul of disability comes Out of the Box

- TAMARA McDONALD

THE creative talents of about 60 Geelong artists living with disability feature in a new popup exhibition.

The Out of the Box Art Show and Inclusion Space showcases paintings and sculptures expressing the artists’ personal experiences and inspiration.

It was curated by renowned textile designer Chela Edmunds, who has worked for global fashion brands including DKNY and Vera Wang.

The exhibition was launched ahead of International Day of People with Disability on December 3.

The day promotes increased awareness and understanding of people living with disability.

City of Greater Geelong councillor Anthony Aitken, who holds the council’s Disability Access, Inclusion and Volunteering portfolio, said it was important to raise community awareness around disability.

“International Day of People with Disability is an important opportunity for all of us to celebrate inclusion and to remember that everyone in our community has an ability,” Cr Aitken said.

“Often the biggest barriers faced by people living with a disability are other people’s attitudes.

“This exhibition is a wonderful showcase of ability and talent, and an example of what can be achieved when we support someone’s ability.”

The exhibition runs 10.30am to 4.30pm daily until December 12 at Renew Geelong, 105-107 Moorabool Street.

The City of Greater Geelong is hosting a range of workshops and events from until December 12 to mark International Day for People with Disability.
