Unbroken records

Division One leaders aim to stay unbeaten

- MATT FLAPPER DIVISION 1

CITY of Geelong and Drysdale continue to set the pace in Division One and both will be determined to ensure they remain undefeated when they meet in their Round 9 clash next week.

City goes head-to-head with Belmont at home tomorrow.

As they chase win number eight, their No.1-ranked skipper Aaron Hyatt is confident his team is on the right track and has the opportunity to set itself up before the Christmas break.

“We have Belmont this week, they come off a great win against Torquay and we play second, third and fourth as we head into the main break,” Hyatt said.

“If we can win three out of those four games, it will be the push towards finals we need.”

Hyatt leads the Division One skippers’ list with six wins from seven matches, but although he leads the list, he is keen to return to the winners’ circle this week.

Last week against St Leonards, Hyatt dropped his first rink points for the season by three.

“We had an off day,” he said. “Saying that, however, the Maloney brothers played terrific.”

Drysdale continues to rack up the wins and has laid the foundation for its next two matches.

Arguably its toughest challenge so far will be on the greens at Torquay tomorrow against a side keen to rebound from last week’s loss to Belmont.

Currently fourth on the ladder, Torquay skipper Ash Prosser said nothing but Torquay’s best would do this week.

“With Drysdale coming to town this week, we will have to be at our best,” Prosser said.

“Drysdale have quality players and that’s why they are second on the ladder and are always hard to beat.

“We will rely on our home ground advantage and hopefully that will give us an edge.”

Drysdale skipper Cal Inderberg believes the next two weeks will be his side’s opportunity to stamp its authority.

“Torquay has traditionally not been a happy hunting ground for us,” Inderberg said. “Fortunately we have our best side ready for the challenge and we won’t be taking them lightly.”

Third-placed Ocean Grove needs to bounce back from last week’s loss to Drysdale when they meet Geelong Cement, while Highton 2 takes on Bell Post Hill.

Leopold hosts St Leonards in the battle of the bottom two sides — both sides chasing their second win.
