Friday night bowls showcases the best of our sport

- MATT FLAPPER COMMENT

AS our region now has the opportunity to restructure what happens with our pennant competition, two clubs will make a proactive move tonight to showcase a Premier Division match and expose the region’s highest level of competition.

Queenscliff, Lara and Leopold — just to name a few — have hosted Friday night matches in the past couple of seasons, but tonight will see the first match transferred to another venue.

With the new City of Geelong complex up and running, Ocean Grove and Buninyong came to an agreement with City of Geelong to battle it out under the roof tonight in their Round 8 Premier Division fixture.

The match, originally scheduled to be played at Ocean Grove, has the potential to attract a strong crowd of members who otherwise would not have the opportunity to watch another pennant match due to competing themselves.

If we are going to restructure a competition for the future, decisions like this can only benefit the game.

Sometimes the blinkers need to come off and we think about what we can do to encourage more exposure of pennant matches outside of the normal 1pm Saturday afternoon timeslot.

Why would you go and watch?

Where else can you go and watch a current Australian under-18 champion, Victorian state representatives both past and present, Ballarat Division One champions from last year — all for free?

You can at City of Geelong Bowls Club tonight from 5.30pm.
