Healy has a dream for 2020

- REBECCA WILLIAMS

AUSTRALIAN batting dynamo Alyssa Healy has a dream to play in front of 90,000 people at the MCG.

And the 28-year-old says women’s cricket can “ride the wave” after Australia’s World T20 victory in the Caribbean and make it happen when the country hosts the next World T20 in early 2020.

Player of the tournament Healy and her teammates arrived home to celebrate at Federation Square yesterday.

After Australia won its fourth World T20 crown, the team is looking ahead to the title defence on home soil.

“The home T20 World Cup is going to be an awesome experience,’’ Healy said.

“Hopefully it’s us playing on the MCG in that final and they’re looking to break that record and get 90-odd thousand there.

“It would be something unbelievably special and no one in this group has played in front of any sort of crowd like that.

“It will take a lot of hard work but, in saying that, I think the way the game is growing at the moment, people are really interested in the Big Bash and the women’s game and hopefully we can just see it go from strength to strength.

Healy said celebrations yesterday were far different from Australia’s previous World T20 victory in 2014.

“The three-peat we came home anonymous and celebrated together as a group,’’ she said. “To come here after a World Cup win and celebrate with Melbourne has been really special.’’

Healy hit a tournamenthigh 225 runs from five innings, at a strike rate of 144.

Her player of the tournament award matched the feat of husband Mitchell Starc at the 2015 one-day World Cup.

“He thought he was going to be the only one to win a player of the tournament in the household,’’ Healy said.

“I couldn’t let him have it. I didn’t let him have it for too long. It’s really cool.’’
