Super gigs for Cougar star Allan

- LACHIE YOUNG

GEELONG Cougars defender Brooke Allan has had her sensational 2018 season rewarded with selection in the Tasmanian Magpies Australian Netball League side.

Allan, who plays for Colac in the GFNL, has also been added to the roster of training partners for Collingwood’s Super Netball League team, and will join Cougars teammates Mel Bragg and Vanessa Augustini.

St Albans and City West Falcons key tall Jane Cook is also part of the squad, and Allan said having some familiar faces would undoubtedly help the transition into her new surrounds.

“It was super-surprising, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting anything but it is unreal,” Allan said.

“I know a fair few of the girls through other teams and state teams and playing against them in the VNL, but a lot of the girls are from Tasmania so I am keen to go and meet them.

“Having Mel and Vanessa there will be good but all of the training partners I pretty much already know.”

Allan will split her time between Melbourne and Tasmania for training and matches and said while the long-term goal was to earn a spot on a Super Netball League list, she was keeping her focus on this season before looking too far ahead.

“I think everyone has those goals but we will see how it pans out,” she said. “I have just turned 20 so I am still not 100 per cent sure what I am doing. I have heard (Tasmania) does camps on weekends and things like that in pre-season, but during the season you play interstate so you are at a different place every second week.”

Allan’s addition to the Magpies set-up comes as several Cougar junior players received call-ups to Victorian squads this week.

Poppy Douglass, Charlotte Todd and Brooke Wilson all earnt spots in the under-17 state squad, as did St Mary’s gun Emma Walters.

Olivia Honey and Allie Smith were named in the under-19s squad, while Ruby Pekin-Schlicht was added as a training partner.
