Queencliff’s comeback

- GRAEME WRIGHT PREMIER LEAGUE

QUEENSCLIFF pulled off what could prove its most important win of the Premier League season, toppling previously unbeaten Bareena by eight shots at home on Saturday.

What’s more, the reigning premier had to do it the hard way, fighting back from 30 shots down just before the break.

It was Bareena’s only loss across eight club matches for the day.

While rinks were split two apiece, Queenscliff champion Barry Gladman proved the difference, winning by 15 shots over Bareena’s Daniel Priddle.

Bareena had the better of the windy conditions early and led after about 20 ends.

The key to Queenscliff’s recovery was not panicking, according to spokesman Steve Sullivan.

Across all four rinks in the final couple of ends before the break, they managed to trim the margin back to just 16 shots.

Sullivan said that after the break Queenscliff continued the momentum and then once in front held Bareena at bay to win by eight shots.

He said that both sides showed good form on a good surface in the windy conditions.

Despite the win, Queenscliff slipped one place to fourth after Sebastopol took three rinks in its win over fifth-placed Lara.

This round kicked off with a match played at a neutral venue, when ladder leader Ocean Grove hosted Buninyong at City of Geelong.

It proved a winning move for the Grove with a thumping 96-shot win over the visitors.

In other games, Eastern Park beat Victoria by 28 shots, Sebastopol won by 24 over Lara and Webbcona was too strong for Highton, getting home by 45 shots.
