CRASH ’UTTER CHAOS’

- OLIVIA SHYING

A BUSINESS owner says a serious Leopold smash could have been catastrophic if it had happened a few hours later.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a Grovedale man, 21, after two cars collided at a Leopold intersection on Saturday.

A sedan driven by a 77-year-old Leopold man then crashed into Pizzas With Attitude.

The driver suffered critical injuries and last night remained in hospital in a critical condition.

The 21-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to Geelong hospital under police guard before he was charged with negligently causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and driving while disqualified.

Detectives were at the scene of the crash, near Melaluka Rd and Bellarine Highway, from 7am until 5pm.

Owner Sally Massey said she arrived at the shop minutes after the crash to find “utter chaos”.

“It’s consumed my every second. The poor man, my thoughts are going out to him,” Ms Massey said.

She said the pizza shop was usually bustling when it opened about 11am.

“It could have been so much worse,” she said.

Ms Massey said community support had been “overwhelming” with many well-wishes coming in when it reopened yesterday. “We’ll fight on,” she said. The Grovedale man is expected to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court today.
