More jail for lying under oath

-

A SEX offender had his stint in jail extended by 10 months yesterday after admitting to a Geelong court he lied under oath and falsely accused a policeman of threatening and stalking him.

Bryan Cooper, 33, made a number of claims against an officer whose job it was to monitor him, including telling a court the sergeant threatened to “kidnap, torture and kill” him and his family in 2016 if he did not leave Geelong.

Other claims made under oath included that the officer threatened to take him to the You Yangs and shoot him in the back of the head, and showed him his police firearm while threatening physical violence against him.

The police officer told a jury earlier this week none of what Cooper said resembled the truth.

Finally yesterday morning the man — accused of perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice — admitted his lies, entering a plea that forced his trial to be aborted.

By the afternoon judge Wendy Wilmoth sentenced him on the latter charge.

The court heard the man would be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life, having served lengthy jail terms for child porn charges and committing an indecent act with a child under-16.

With one of those jail terms ending last week, Cooper now has an extra 10 months to serve.
