CAIN AIMS FOR NATIONAL TITLE

- ALEX OATES

GEELONG’S Cain Brunton can create his own slice of history on Friday night.

Entering his fifth bout as a professional, Brunton is in striking distance of a career-defining victory.

Fighting in the co-main event at Thunder Dome 28 at Metro City in Perth, Brunton is gunning for the vacant Australian featherweight title.

“It’s the same title that Johnny Famechon fought for back in the day,” proudly declared Brunton, who is trained by Tony Salta.

An Australian Boxing Hall of Famer, Famechon won the Commonwealthand WBC featherweight titles in a career that netted 56 wins from 67 bouts.

And now Brunton, 25, is eyeing his shot at glory when he takes on West Australian Jackson Jon England.

“I’m excited more than ever,” Brunton said.

“We fly out tonight and I’m excited for this little adventure and to beat him in his hometown.”

With four straight wins and three by KO, Brunton has catapulted himself into title contention.

“I dropped a few blokes in my last couple fights and they started to notice me,” Brunton said.

“I don’t think too many people can say they have been given a shot at the Australian title after four fights. If I can win this there will be some bragging rights.”

Brunton revealed plans for the featherweight title shot against England were in the works following his victory over Worakan Thaimongkol in Geelong in June.

“I had a couple of weeks off and then Tony called me and said ‘We’ve got an Australian title fight, what do you reckon?’

“I said ‘Beautiful, let’s do it’.

“We had a look at him and thought, ‘Let’s take the opportunity’. Within a month or so we were signing contracts, but we had to keep it on the down low.

“It’s been a long training camp because I’ve known for so long … five or six months.

“But I’ve been doing all sorts of stuff … yoga, sprints, running, sparring and some of my boxing training up in Melbourne with Sam Soliman, Kyle Webb and Clint Alderton.

“With my training with Tony Salta, there’s a fair bit of knowledge between those boys.”

England is a dangerous customer, boasting a 7-1 professional record, but Brunton insists he and Salta have done their homework.

“He’s got enough power, but we’ve done our research on him,” Brunton said.

“He likes to move around a lot, he likes to be fancy and he’s got a nice, quick jab. He’s got all the tricks in the book, to be honest, all the punches, but it’s going to be different when he gets hit.

“I don’t think he fought anyone of the same calibre as me. I’m there for business, I’m not there to muck around.

“I’m there to bring the title home to Geelong.”
