GEELONG STUDENTS IN STATE’S BEST
KARDINIA International College and the Geelong College have again reached great heights in VCE, with our region’s academic stars celebrated when ATAR results were released yesterday.
Geelong Grammar School’s highest VCE achiever Nina Morrison, who scored an ATAR of 99.75, has proved she shines academically as she does on the footy field, after being taken on by the Geelong Cats’ AFLW side recently with the No.1 draft pick.
The 2018 school captain received a perfect score of 50 in chemistry, and plans to study exercise and sport science at Deakin.
And the dux from state school Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College received an outstanding ATAR of 99.85, among the highest for public school students in the state.
More than 64,000 students across the state received their Victorian Certificate of Education or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning results yesterday.
The Geelong College’s Andrew Duan achieved the highest possible ATAR score of 99.95, one of about 35 students statewide to do so.
Mr Duan achieved perfect scores in English and French, and will pursue his dream of studying medicine at Monash University.
“It seemed a bit surreal to me,” the Highton 17-year-old said.
“I did get a bit emotional after a couple of minutes. My parents and the school have given me some really heartfelt, consistent and excellent support.”
Six Geelong College students achieved ATARs of higher than 99, meaning 4.6 per cent of the 2018 year 12 cohort from the school finished in the top 1 per cent of the state.
More than 18 per cent of Kardinia International College’s 155 VCE students received an ATAR of above 90.
Another 36 per cent received an ATAR over 80.
“It’s testament to our excellent teaching staff and our students who are engaged in learning and I congratulate them both on our excellent results,” principal David Fitzgerald said.
The school’s co-captain Son Pham was named dux, with an ATAR of 99.9.
Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College dux Brynnie Rafe achieved d 99.85.
Ms Rafe studied Indonesian, Latin and French and she received a perfect score of 50 in literature.
“I was very surprised, rised, I’d worked hard all l year but it’s very rare to see e these kinds of results from a state tate school,” the Jan Juc 18-year-old said. d
“I never thought it would be that high.
“I’m planning on doing a bachelor of arts at Melbourne Uni majoring in French and maybe another language.
“I’m not sure what I want to do in the future, but maybe international law.”
She said she loved her school and was thankful to her teachers.
Christian College dux Owen Barrett received an ATAR of 99.45, 5 while hile 11 11.81 81 per cent of the school’s students received an ATAR above 90, compared with 10 per cent nationally.
At St Joseph’s College, 13.2 per cent of students received an ATAR of above 90.
At Oberon High School, dux Alex Brownbridge achieved an ATAR of 97.5.
At North Geelong Secondary College, the median subject study score incr increased fro from 24 in 20 2017 to 2 26.5 this y year, and th the school had two stude students achieve A ATARs in the 90s. “We have improv improved . . . (they h are the) best r results we’ve had in a long time,” assistant principal Paul Dawson said. At Belmont High School, nine students got ATAR scores of above 90. Schools are still awaiting the results of students who studied the International Baccalaureate rather than VCE, which will be revealed on January 4.
