Lawson picks up an ace new ride

-

GEELONG golfer Deyen Lawson has signed off 2018 with a new car worth more than $250,000, capping a golden patch of golf in only his fourth European Tour event.

The 27-year-old, pictured, won a BMW 850M for a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th in the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa.

Golf Channel commentator Charlie Rymer proved a tough critic, though, rating Lawson’s shot “a C-minus”.

“It looked a little thin to me,” said Rymer, a tough marker of made aces, on the Morning Drive program.

“Did you see the way it rolled in? It’s an 8-iron from 167 yards, shouldn’t it be backing up a little? That’s like a Cminus there.

“He probably pushed it a little bit, too; he wasn’t aiming at that flag.”

It was Lawson’s second consecutive eagle, having made three at the par-5 15th hole, lifting him to a 2-under 70 and a tie for 47th in his final event of the year.

It was his second-best result after a tied 30th in the Hong Kong Open, earning him a cheque for $11,800.

Lawson, who completed his traineeship at Curlewis Golf Club, earned a European Tour card at the qualifying school last month.

American David Lipsky won the event on his first attempt. His finalround 68 gave him a two-shot victory over Scot David Drysdale. South Africa’s Zander Lombard (69) and Scott Jamieson (72), another Scot, finished in a tie for third. AAP/PGA Australia
