Cup silver for skiing superstar

- NICK WADE

BARWON Heads skiing superstar Jakara Anthony continues to ride the momentum of her Winter Olympics success, claiming her first ever World Cup medal.

The 20-year-old, who finished fourth in the women’s mogul skiing at PyeongChang in February, won silver at the event in Thaiwoo, China.

Having easily moved through qualifying with a series of strong runs, the Christian College graduate clinched silver in the six-athlete Super Final with a score of 82.42, just shy of USA’s Jaelin Kauf (83.08).

“I’m really happy with how I’ve been able to perform so far this season and especially today with getting my first World Cup podium in China,” Anthony said, as reported by olympics.com.au.

“For me, today was about getting repetition on the runs that I had put down in training in competition.

“I was able to put down three high quality runs and qualify in second and first for Final 1 and Final 2 respectively.

“To then finish up in second place was a great way to wrap up the day.

“It was also a great day for the rest of the team with James (Matheson) making his first super final and Britt (Cox) and Matt (Graham) joining me up top for the final.”

Cox finishing ninth overall.

In February, Anthony became an instant national hero and one of the region’s most successful Olympians — summer or winter — after a stunning performance in PyeongChang.

Then 19, the Winter Games debutant produced what was the best result of her career, narrowly missing a medal with a brilliant fourth place finish in the women’s moguls.

The former Barwon Sports Academy athlete’s performance was Australia’s best ever placing in a women’s Olympic moguls event.
