RETIREES SEEING THROUGH LABOR’S TRANSPARENCY

-

CHRIS Bowen’s plea for self-funded retirees to vote for Labor because Labor is being “upfront” on the franking credit changes has the ring of desperation about it.

Bowen having given SMSF retirees the “two-fingered salute” (as Scott Morrison aptly coined it) was supported by Bill Shorten with his “we are not for turning” interview on the ABC over the weekend.

Both were arrogant and completely dismissive of voters’ concerns. Bowen then rubbed salt into the wound with his “welfare for the wealthy” claim earlier this week.

There are a lot of problems for Labor with regards to this proposal but by far the biggest is that those in union funds, more likely to vote Labor, are exempt but those in selfmanaged funds, more likely to be Coalition voters, are caught.

Those of us caught in this are just not going to accept that this is a fair outcome and no amount of Bowen pleading for a fair go for Labor will cut through.

Most retirees have a large family network, and when Nana and Pop are getting diddled the word quickly spreads. The one million or so directly affected could easily grow to three to five million if family members get involved and that would be a real threat to Labor’s chances of forming government.

I have already alerted my children (my grandchildren are not yet voting age) by word of mouth and social media and have asked them to share it around.

Keep an eye out for a concerted campaign to urge us oldies to spread the word as the election looms. John Pohlman, Leopold
