Eureka! A new pub hub

- OLIVIA REED

FORMER Geelong nightclub the Eureka Hotel is set to become a restaurant and supper club due to open in April.

Centra Hotel owner Cam O’Keefe said he would operate a restaurant-pub in the downstairs section of the Little Malop St building and a latenight supper club upstairs.

Mr O’Keefe said the restaurant, to be called WestEnd Hotel, would be an “accessibly priced” gastropub suitable for “everyday experiences”.

He said the supper club, Short’s Place Social, would operate as a large function space catering for up to 200 people with an extended liquor licence.

“It will be a late-night alternative to nightclubs,” Mr O’Keefe said.

“People can get a bite to eat or have a nice glass of wine and there will be table service.”

Short’s Place Social will stay open until 5am on Saturdays and Sundays.

Construction on the exterior of the building was completed on Monday, with the classic brickwork restored.

Mr O’Keefe hasn’t locked in a date to open the restaurant, but said it would be in the “next couple of months”.

And he plans to open the supper club “towards the end of the year”.

Unlike the building’s previous tenants, the new businesses will not have live entertainment.

McLachlan, from Potts Point, in New South Wales, denies the allegations.

The star’s case was listed in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for the first time yester-

The Eureka Hotel, constructed circa-1912, was most recently a pumping nightclub under the ownership of former mayor Darryn Lyons.

Mr O’Keefe said the hotel building was the second-oldest continually licensed venue in Geelong.

Batman Investments man- aging director Bill Votsaris, who is part of a local consortium that bought the 1537sq m site last January, said the building would once again bring a “great offering for the Geelong community and for tourists coming to Geelong”.

“Currently in Little Malop St, if you’re a group of 20 peo- ple knocking off work and want somewhere for dinner and a chat after work, there’s not too many venues that can cater for them,” he said.
