DRAW BEAD ON CLASS GLASS

-

MORE than 4000 people are set to admire glass artwork at the ninth annual Festival of Glass this weekend.

Montreal glass artists Cedric Ginart and Karina Guevin will showcase their artistic talent at the festival, alongside Murano glass master Davide Penso.

The Festival of Glass expo includes glass art displays from 50 local and interstate artists, art awards, a treasure hunt and glass art supply sales.

It will also feature

demonstrations including mosaics, leadlighting, glass fusing and bead-weaving.

Ginart and Guevin are renowned for their creativity and skill in blowing and sculpting glass, especially handmade glass goblets.

Penso, who has been working with glass since the ’80s, said a love of design led him to create delicate pieces. His latest creations include intricately patterned glass beads, which can take up to an hour, and blown glass sculptures of seaweed, inspired by the Great Barrier Reef.

“The movement of the seaweed stayed with me,” the self-taught artist said.

He once had four shops in Venice selling his glass jewellery and he also designed jewellery for Italian brand Max Mara.

Meanwhile, the festival’s annual bottle valuation uncovered a $600 beer bottle last Sunday. The Bellarine Historical Society and ABCR Auctions had

invited people to bring in any bottles for valuers David and Paul Bruce to appraise.

The black horse ale bottle was produced about 1860 by Sydney’s Kent Brewery and is worth between $600 and $700.

Ginart and Guevin will present their More is Better workshop today until Friday at Drysdale’s Cafe Zoo.

Penso will host Twilight Flames on Saturday, an evening of glass blowing and sculpting at The Range, Curlewis, starting at 6.30pm.

The Festival of Glass expo runs from 10am-4pm this Sunday at the Christian College Stadium, 40 Collins St, Drysdale.
