Geelong’s Carr captains Vics in the over-60s
OVER-60S “Sheffield Shield” cricket is returning to Geelong, with Victoria playing Tasmania at North Geelong on Tuesday.
Local players Chris Carr and Jeff Cole will feature in the Victorian team, as Geelong continues to be one of the leading regions for veteran cricket.
Carr, who will captain the team, has played for Victoria 18 times and last year toured Eng- land with the over-60s team.
He said he was honoured to captain Victoria, especially at his home club ground.
Cole, who has played most of his cricket in Colac, now plays for Geelong and is representing Victoria for the 11th time.
He has toured Sri Lanka and England with Victorian and South Australian teams. Australian
Both have played for Victoria in successful carnivals in Sydney, Canberra and Perth.
The over-60s cricket movement is gathering momentum, with an increasing number of champions from yesteryear playing in this age group.
Geelong is leading the state for participation in the over-60s competition.
Geelong is also the only team to have two sides playing every week in the Veterans Cricket Victoria competition.
The region also has an over-70s and over-50s team.
The over-70s will play Tasmania at KFC Oval, Queens Park, and the over-50s will play Tasmania at Grovedale’s Burdoo Reserve on Tuesday.
