DYLAN SET FOR BRAZIL
LOCAL junior swim king Dylan Logan is setting his sights on competing at the 2021 Deaflympics after being selected in the Australian squad for the upcoming World Deaf Swimming Championships in Brazil.
The 16-year-old Victorian swimming representative is originally from South Africa and only recently had his Australian citizenship approved after calls to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson’s office fast-tracked the application.
Having competed for Christian College at the 2018 School Sport Australia Championships, Logan is now looking to make a splash across multiple events on the world stage in August.
His father, Marc Logan, is proud of how the youngster is tracking as he prepares for the biggest moment of his emerging career. Marc said while just competing at the World Championships would be a feat, the 2021 Deaflympics remains Dylan’s long-term goal.
“He’s going to be quite young and it’s going to be his first major international competition, so hopefully it prepares him for the Deaflympics,” Mr Logan said.
“The main thing is just for him to compete and get some experience under the belt, so hopefully there are some good results that come through, but (they’re) not the primary objective at the moment.”
The Barwon Sports Academy athlete is also set to compete for Victoria at the national championships in Adelaide before he jets off to Brazil to represent his new nation. The teen is also battling the rigours of school life and early-morning starts on his way to gold.
“So far he’s still enjoying it, it’s a bit of a pain sometimes getting him up in the morning for training, but he’s doing quite well ... we’re quite happy,” Mr Logan said.
Logan was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss at the age of four. His younger brother James (12), also a talented swimmer, was diagnosed with the same hearing loss.
