Tributes flow after death of beloved Lord of the Isles publican

-

PETER Burnet’s beloved Geelong Cats will wear black armbands on Monday to honour the public figure as the city mourns the loss of one of its favourite sons.

The beloved Lord of the Isles publican and charity worker died on Thursday as a result of post-operative infection, having spent a week on life support in Queensland.

Public figures, friends, family and wellwishers delivered a flood of tributes to the man whose name had become synonymous with the Lord of the Isles Tavern after almost 40 years at its helm.

Daughter Emma posted a heartfelt message online.

“To all our friends and family … today Mum, Nick and I lost a very important person in our life, our Dad, husband and poppie. He went far too early, had so much more to do in his life,” it read.

“Dad did so much in his life and achieved so much. Dad, we love you and thank you for being the greatest hero we could ever ask for. Forever in our hearts and dreams xoxo.”

Emma also explained the cause of her father’s passing in a separate social media post.

“Dad had an operation two weeks ago on his neck, to relieve pain. During the operation the surgeon nicked his pharynx, which then lead to major infections, golden staph,” she said.

“That’s why we are in QLD cause they told my dad he was OK to fly. He wanted to recover in his happy place with the love of his life. We flew up here on Friday when they put my dad on life support. He was fighting, so bloody hard, but his body couldn’t do it anymore. Our dad passed away from overwhelming septic shock with organ failure.”

Australian Hotels Association figures offered their tributes to Mr Burnett — who had spent 21 years as their Victorian president, three terms as national president and was inducted into their hall of fame.

“Peter was an industry icon taken way too soon,” AHA Victorian president and longtime friend David Canny said.

AHA national president Scott Leach said: “A giant has fallen. Peter’s legacy is undisputed. Peter made an undeniable contribution to our industry that has not just benefited hoteliers today. His efforts and achievements will echo through to the next generation … such was his impact and influence on our industry.”

Mr Burnett was a director of the Geelong Football Club, director of Tourism Australia and chairman of the E.J. Whitten Prostate Cancer Foundation. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 for his years of service to tourism, hospitality, sport and charities.

The sudden death of Lord of the Isles Tavern publican Peter Burnett, aged 68, has touched many in the region and further afield. He was loved by so many. A former Australian Hotels Association national president and Geelong Football Club director, Mr Burnett was appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in 2015 for his years of service to tourism and hospitality and for his work with charity and sports organisations.
