Fence goes up to stop dumping
A GROVEDALE op shop has gone to great lengths to deter dumping over the Easter long weekend by fencing off the entire storefront.
The Brotherhood of St Laurence Community Store in Grovedale has erected temporary fencing to stay in place until Tuesday, following a mountain of dumped donations in 2018.
Store manager Brian Anderson estimated the store was stuck with a $1000 price tag to clean up dumped donations and rubbish last year.
“The carpark was just full of donations that had been left while the store was closed,” Mr Anderson said. “It’s a big carpark so there was a lot of rubbish. We rely on the generosity of the community and we thank donors for their support. Dumping of household goods near our store outside store hours creates problems for us.
“If they are not high quality, we have to pay for rubbish to be removed. This diverts money away from the services we are providing.
“That was the reason I’ve organised what we’re doing with the fence — to try to stop that from actually happening.”

Mr Anderson called on people to either donate to op shops during regular hours, or to check out the City of Greater Geelong’s new hard rubbish collection program. GET ready, kids — Adventure Park’s giant Easter egg hunt is on tomorrow.
A whopping 15,000 chocolate eggs will be up for grabs from 2pm as Easter fever takes over the park.
Now in its 16th year, the annual egg hunt is included with park entry.
Children up to 16 years are invited to join the hunt, with separate areas catering for different age groups.
Guests will also be able to meet and take photos with the Easter bunny before and after the hunt.
