KAREN MATTHEWS ON POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD

-

SEEMS Tasmanian parents will now have the option of ignoring scientific fact in favour of political correctness by not having to include the gender of newborn children on birth certificates.

It all came about after Liberal Speaker Sue Hickey crossed the floor to vote with the Opposition on the Marriage Amendments Bill.

Ms Hickey, in supporting the amended legislation, said the unintended consequence of not passing the legislation would result in “more psychological damage to the transgender community and their families”.

Then a jubilant Martine Delaney from Transforming Tasmania, added her two bob’s worth, saying the new legislation would “save lives’’.

Unfortunately, neither chose to expand on their claims leaving the rest of us to take it as gospel. Well sorry, I don’t. And I’ve yet to be convinced as to how the disclosure of a medical fact on a birth certificate could possibly have any effect on anyone’s psychological condition, let alone a baby’s.

Ah, but this is not about the baby. This is all about the agenda of one group that sees itself as white knight of all that should and should not be in the world, pushing their ideas down everyone else’s throats.

Apparently the legislation not only makes gender on birth certificates optional but also removes the requirement for transgender people to have surgery in order to have their gender recognised.

It also allows people aged 16 years or older to apply to change their registered gender without parental approval.

But it was the gender option on birth certificates that seemed to get the blood racing with activists, leaving the rest of us to ponder the inevitable.

Where, oh where, will it end and will this paranoia eventually spread to animals?

Will a “mare” one day become “a horse that gives birth” or a “bull”, “a large, burly quadruped with horns used to inseminate cows which then give birth”?

Fact is whether people are gay, bisexual, transsexual or non-gender specific, shouldn’t it all be about understanding and acceptance and treating each other with dignity and respect?

Of course it should. It’s just common sense.

And with all that is wrong in the world, couldn’t we just leave babies to be babies, to accept the genetically scientific fact and leave the issue of gender to them and a decision that they can make in their own good time and of their own choosing?

Certainly better than having your parents saying, “Well medical science says it’s a girl but we’ll just leave it out in case it changes its mind later?”

Give the kid a break, give it a sex. Show some direction and, if things change down the track, well good luck to them.

Meanwhile Liberal Premier Will Hodgman has not ruled out repealing the legislation if the opportunity arises. I wish him luck.

But seriously, isn’t it about time we called out political correctness for what it is?

Chewing gum for the brain.
