Giants tagger de Boer has Fyfe in his sights

- EAMONN TIERNAN

GWS coach Leon Cameron has backed in-form tagger Matt de Boer to shut down returning Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe in today’s clash at Manuka Oval.

De Boer has been sensational in shutting down Richmond’s Dustin Martin and Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield in the past two weeks and now has 29-year-old Fyfe — a third Brownlow medallist — in his sights.

Cameron re-signed de Boer last week and said the former Dockers midfielder had proved pivotal in the Giants’ 3-1 start to the season.

“When a player is at the top of his game, there’s nothing better to watch, but he also understands that last week is gone and he comes up against a huge challenge in his old team this week,” Cameron said.

“Matty de Boer’s greatest strength is his ability to play on two or three (players). I know people talk about what he’s done over the past month but it’s not just been on one particular player.

“They’ve all been good players and Fremantle are no different. You’ve got Fyfe, (David) Mundy, (Michael) Walters — it’s a really good midfield and there’s a number of players Matty will come up against.

“The thing we like about Matty is he’s really really flexible. He’s got a really steely mindset and he can switch in and out of roles (and play forward).”

Pundits said the GWS premiership window closed at the end of last season but Cameron wasn’t getting carried away with their strong start.

“You don’t really find out until rounds eight to 10 where each side is lining up and some make a late dash but all we can control is our start. We’re happy with 3-1, which is great, but I’d prefer to be 4-1,” Cameron said.
