EASTER TREATS

Crabbe leads local charges on the fairways

- RYAN REYNOLDS

GEELONG’S junior golfers have enjoyed strong Easter holiday form, picking up a number of good results at courses around the country.

Leading the charge was Barwon Valley and Commonwealth pennant star Mitch Crabbe (left), who travelled with the junior state team to Queensland and finished tied for 29th at the Australian Boys Championships.

Crabbe rebounded from an opening-round 77 to shoot rounds of 72, 68 and 75 at Southport. His eight-over for the tournament put him 21 shots behind winner Elvis Smylie.

Smylie, the son of Australian Open tennis champion Liz, carded rounds of 63 and 69 in a stunning final day at his home course to win the tournament by eight shots.

Crabbe also fired at the Interstate Series at Sanctuary Cove, securing 4.5 wins from his six matches for Victoria.

The Victorians finished the tournament in fourth, but if luck had gone their way could have finished higher.

ELSEWHERE, rising golf star Matt McFarlane won the Northern and Latrobe Junior Tournament, finishing at three-over.

He finished second at Northern with a round of 72 and won at Latrobe with 74.

In-between those rounds he finished second at the Kooringal Junior Tournament.

Portarlington golfer Jack Martin won The Sands Junior Tournament with a one-under round of 71 enough to secure the trophy.

Thirteenth Beach pennant player Lachie Bath was three shots behind in second with a round of 74.

All four golfers are part of the Barwon Sports Academy.
