Council changes mooted

A RECORD number of purr-fect companions now have a forever home.

Following the launch of the Geelong Animal Welfare Society’s promotion to waive adoption fees for cats aged over six months old, a total of 130 cats and kittens were adopted.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of last weekend’s cat adoption promotion,” chief executive officer Helen Cocks said.

The program was started to combat the current overflow of felines at the Moolap shelter.

Ms Cocks said many adult cats still needed to find their forever homes.

GAWS is now encouraging people to participate in their Desex July promotion.

“If you currently own a cat not from GAWS … your cat can be desexed and microchipped at a reduced fee through our community vet clinic,” Ms Cocks said.

All adoption animals are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and flea and worm treated.

People are welcome to visit the cats in need of finding a new companion at 325 Portarlington Rd, Moolap.

Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek yesterday revealed the Government’s intention to introduce a new Local Government Act with six new proposed reforms — including a preference for single-councillor wards.

Mr Somyurek suggested the system would make councillors more accountable to their communities, despite the 2016 Commission of Inquiry into Greater Geelong City Council report slamming the system.

The report, which led to the sacking of Geelong council,

Mr Somyurek said the new laws would help councils be more accountable.

“These changes boost consultation and engagement between councils, residents, ratepayers and businesses — as well as providing for ongoing accountability,” he said.

“We need a modern Local Government Act that meets the changing needs and expectations of Victorians — these are important changes that will deliver better outcomes for local communities.”
