United plan for schools

- RYAN REYNOLDS

NEWCOMER Western United is rolling up its sleeves and getting into the local community ahead of its debut A-League season.

The franchise — branded as a team for Victoria’s West, including Geelong and Ballarat — has made numerous school visits over the past fortnight as it looks to get a foothold in the region.

United visited North Geelong Secondary and Holy Family Bell Park last week, and has also dropped in to Geelong Grammar School and Kardinia International College among others.

Western United director of football Steve Horvat said the reception the club has received from the Geelong community has been immense.

“It’s been incredible,” said Horvat, a former Socceroo and North Geelong Warriors champion.

“We’ve wanted to get the players, the coaches and myself out in the community and that’s kicked off over the last two weeks in the Geelong region.

“Every single school we go to, the enthusiasm from kids and teachers has been incredible. As soon as we are done with one session they are asking us when they can come back.

“It really is exciting for the region and hopefully the support (we get) from the local community.”

Western United was yesterday out at the soccer schools carnival at Geelong Rangers Soccer Club, spending a few hours speaking to the players competing.

Melbourne Victory has long had a hold on the Geelong region, while Melbourne Heart (before turning into Melbourne City) also dabbled in the area.

However, Western United will have a concerted push into the local community, with the club set to play a number of games at GMHBA Stadium in its first two seasons in the league.

“I think what we are all about is growing the game of football. That’s one of our mantras and what we want to stand for as a club. We owe it to the region.

“We will be this side of the West Gate … for us, it’s about getting more boys and girls passionate about the game of football and loving the game of football. It’s our duty to make the game healthy and get people interested in the sport.”

Horvat urged any schools or groups interested in having Western United visit to email community@WUFC.com.au
