So, just what’s in a name?

- CHANEL ZAGON

A POINT Lonsdale street could be renamed amid fears its name could be offensive if mispronounced.

A Geelong council letter to property owners and residents said Chiton Way would be changed to Casablanca Way, in a bid to wipe out confusion over its pronunciation.

“The name Chiton Way is causing confusion in pronunciation and can cause offence when pronounced incorrectly,” the letter by revenue, property and valuations coordinator Caroline Ruiter read.

“The developer has requested this road name be altered based on this and has chosen a name which is keeping within the current theme.

“The proposed new name for this section of roadway is Casablanca Way.”

The new name originates from a shipwreck in Bass Strait.

It is understood the developer had requested the name change on behalf of residents.

A Point Lonsdale Civic Association spokesman said the group supported the proposal if most residents were concerned about the name.

“If the name ‘Chiton Way’ is sufficiently concerning to the majority of local residents then it is quite appropriate to consider a name change,” he said.

“In terms of an alternative name, we note that the other streets in the vicinity are named after molluscs found in Victorian waters, which is quite fitting for a coastal town.

“A similar type of name is something which could be considered by The Point residents and the City of Greater Geelong.”

The official registration of the name change would take up to six months.

The proposal will be open for submissions until July 15.

People are encouraged to submit feedback or contact the council’s property officer Cynthia on 5272 4632.
