Kelly much happier being a Cat as talks continue

- JON RALPH

BROWNLOW Medal favourite Tim Kelly says he is enjoying his second season in Geelong vastly more than his difficult debut year.

And his manager will spend next week in the city engaged in talks.

The $3 Brownlow favourite put in another brilliant performance on Friday night against Adelaide and said afterwards that he was growing to appreciate the city’s charms.

He still might request a trade back to Perth and both WA clubs are expected to offer him bumper deals.

But Kelly said he was thriving in the city as well as the footy club and his manager was attempting to frame trigger-based deals that might keep him at the club next year.

Kelly told ABC Radio after a 33-possession, two-goal bestafield performance he was enjoying the charms of Geelong more than his first turbulent year.

“It is all up at the air at the moment but I guess I am really enjoying my footy this year,” he said.

“I enjoyed it last year but it’s been a lot more enjoyable coming back to Geelong for a second time around; (I am) enjoying Geelong as a town and having more fun and enjoying time outside footy. Footy is going well but it’s been an enjoyable year outside of footy as well. We have to see how things pan out but there hasn’t been a decision.”

Kelly arrived at the club only weeks after the birth of his twins, and said the year was a whirlwind of little sleep and homesickness.

“I have got a young family and last year it was pretty tough. I didn’t really know Geelong. I bought a young family over to the other side of the country,” he said.

“Sometimes you can feel isolated and very home-bound. The weather is a factor, it doesn’t encourage you to get four-year-old boys out and about. This time my twins are a year and a half, the oldest boy is four soon so it’s easier to get out and about and I am enjoying my time more in that space.”
