“We shuffled the magnets around a bit during the week,” Carson said. “Rhys played as a defender, we used ‘ Tudes’ ( Tudor) as a ruck/ forward, which allowed us to use ( Dan) Capiron up through the middle as well, which just balanced things.”

The reigning premiers face unbeaten Newtown & Chilwell in a mouth- watering clash after the bye. NEWTOWN & Chilwell pulled away in the second half against Grovedale, running out winners, 10.15 ( 75) to 3.4 ( 22). Leading by just five points at halftime, the Eagles kept Grovedale to just a solitary behind in the second half. Sam Nichols ( four goals) and Connor Joseph ( three goals) shone up forward for the unbeaten Eagles, with Will Robinson named their best. Tom Hornsey was prolific and Liam Betson was also one of Grovedale’s best. COLAC saw past a plucky St Albans, winning again at Central Reserve 7.13 ( 55) to 4.10 ( 34). The Tigers were made to work by the Supersaints, but two goals each from Kody Spokes, Liam McCarthy and Kane Leersen ensured the victory, with Dean Felekos named the Tigers’ best. Billy Beardsell ( two goals) was dangerous for St Albans, with Andy Higgins again their best player, as the Supersaints matched it with the Tigers after being made to play catch- up all day from a 20point quarter- time deficit. LEOPOLD defied the conditions to notch up 29 scoring shots against North Shore in its 11.18 ( 84) to 3.3 ( 21) victory.

The Lions were never challenged, as Sam Boyd ( three goals) and Marcus Thompson ( two goals) shrugged off any inaccuracy. Trent Thompson won a stack of the footy and was named the Lions’ best. Seagulls captain Mitch Vandenberg and Leopold ruckman Trent West played off in an intriguing battle in the middle of the ground. GEELONG West held on for the narrowest of victories, defeating Lara by a point at West Oval 6.10 ( 46) to 6.9 ( 45). Neither side could kick a goal in the final term as the rain crashed down, with the Giants holding firm to deny Lara a famous victory. The Cats burst out to a 21- point lead at quarter- time before conceding five second- quarter goals to go into halftime down by two points. Defender Scott Frangos was the Giants’ best, continuing his consistent season, while Lochie Huppatz was also influential. Lara midfielder Nick Egan was the star for the Cats.
