HOW I HELPED A STAR SHINE AT THE LOGIES

- GRETA STONEHOUSE

GT fashion editor Deni Todorovic talks through styling Home And Away star Sam Frost for the Logies. Frost, who rose to fame through The

Bachelor before becoming Australia’s first Bachelorette was nominated for the most popular new talent last year. PUTTING a look together for the Logies can take months of preparation. For Sam and I it started in May. Before the process started I put together a concept and mood board for the vibe I had in mind.

As we did a really glam glitzy gown moment last year, I wanted this year’s look to feel fresh, strong, sharp and modern. Tailoring is such a key look right now, so the idea of a blazer dress instantly came to mind and I felt it would be something unexpected.

Sam and her team loved the idea and off we went. We teamed up with amazing Sydney-based designer Mariam Seddiq to bring the look for life. Here’s what the lead-up looked like:

TWO WEEKS OUT: First fitting with Sam and designer via FaceTime to confirm the exact design. ONE WEEK OUT: Tuesday 6am: Land in Sydney and head straight to Mariam’s studio to see the progress of the blazer dress.

Wednesday am: Start the selection process of bags, shoes and jewellery to go with the dress. I initially am thinking metallics but also like the idea of a completely white tonal look with slashes of silver. I also manage to find the shoe I’ve been dreaming of to complete the look and take a sigh of relief.

Wednesday pm: First fitting that Sam gets to try on the shell of the blazer dress so that Mariam can drape it on her body and pin for alterations. All of us collectively gasp at how much we love the direction this is going. Post fitting I head to a store with Mariam to select the perfect satin buttons for the look.

Thursday: Confirm Sam’s jewellery options with the team at Swarovski.

Friday pm: Final fitting with Sam. Mariam has completed the blazer dress and it’s even better than I could have hoped. At the last minute we make a change to the button configuration. I went for a tonal look with the accessories, doing an ivory clutch and shoe with diamante details that tie together the jewellery Sam’s wearing.

Yesterday — 2:30pm: The glam process begins. We chose to go for a really strong look in terms of hair and make-up. Sam’s hair will be lengthened by way of extensions, slicked back into a really fierce, fashion-forward pony. The make-up vibe we were going for was all about a smoky eye, strong contour and nude lip. It’s all about the strong eye and letting Sam’s natural glow come through with the make-up.

5pm: It’s time for Sam to pack her YSL clutch and make her way to the Red Carpet and let that Mariam Seddiq blazer dress do all the talking.

GRANT Denyer may have been relaxed on last night’s annual Logies red carpet but he’s fired-up about one nominee who he says has run a particularly “aggressive” campaign.

Hard Quiz host Tom Gleeson has run a comedic campaign against his fellow nominees for the 61st Gold Logie Award, after he successfully rallied behind Denyer for last year’s top prize.

“Tom Gleeson has run a rather aggressive campaign, an angry campaign this year, he’s taken shots at everyone, including my Gold Logie win last year,” Denyer said.

“I’m not a massive fan. It is our only institution, it’s the only game in town for TV and while it’s not that important to everyone it’s important to me.

“It was the most magical experience of my professional life, winning it last year.”

Gleeson was the favourite to win this year just ahead of Ten Network’s Amanda Keller.

The two front runners were followed by ABC gardening guru Costa Georgiadis, Neighbours favourite Eve Morey, Doctor Doctor’s Rodger Corser, Sam Mac from Sunrise and Waleed Aly from The Project.

After nearly a seven-month hiatus Karl Stefanovic was back in action at the awards, saying his hosting gig on Nine Network’s This Time Next Year had helped him put his life in perspective.

“I really needed the time off and I am ready and raring to go,” Stefanovic said.

“And it’s certainly nice to sleep in, especially after tonight.”

There was plenty of colour and glitz on the red carpet.

Keller, who was among the six nominees for the Gold Logie, appropriately wore gold. But in a break from tradition, she scrapped the sky-high heels for bejewelled sneakers.

Sophie Monk donned a dramatic gold lame frock, declaring on Instagram that “if you can’t win a Gold Logie … dress as one.”

Carrie Bickmore stunned in a red ball gown on her return from maternity leave, while Nine journalist Leila McKinnon also chose red, albeit with a more daring thigh-high split.

Olympia Valance also went thigh-high, as did Sonia Kruger.

Red was also the hue of choice for The Voice judge Guy Sebastian. He wasn’t the only bloke to put his own spin on the traditional tux, with ABC gardening guru Costa Georgiadis — a Gold Logie nominee — adorning his with in-season flowers.

The event was held at The Star on the Gold Coast.
