Burglary accused denied bail
A HOMELESS man accused of breaking into a Geelong house and assaulting another man was denied bail yesterday.
Marcus Grogan, 43, represented himself during a failed bid for bail at Geelong Magistrates’ Court.
The rough sleeper was charged with serious offences, including aggravated burglary, intentionally causing injury and an assault charge.
It was alleged Mr Grogan went to the rear of a Geelong unit soon after 10pm Saturday, and came face-to-face with another man when he broke inside.
Senior Constable Daniel Hose told the court Mr Grogan grabbed hold of the man, struck him in the face before calling him “a dog”.
The court was told the alleged victim suffered bruising to his face.
Mr Grogan allegedly left the unit in a ute, driving it to an industrial estate in Grovedale.
Sen-Constable Hose said estate workers noticed Mr Grogan acting suspiciously the next day and contacted police.
It’s alleged Mr Grogan refused to tell police his name and denied a nearby car was his.
A police search allegedly uncovered Mr Grogan’s wallet, and police say the vehicle identification number of his car was scrubbed and it had false number plates.
Mr Grogan told the court he had been diagnosed with ADHD, a split personality disorder and had not had his medication in days.
Magistrate Bob Kumar said Mr Grogan was an “unacceptable risk” of reoffending if released on bail. He was remanded in custody to appear in court on October 4.
