Toledo chases J-Bay three-peat

- Surfing with ROBBO sport@geelongadvertiser.com.au

JEFFREYS Bay is off to a quick start with the world’s best point break delivering fun perfect waves, but it is somewhat unspectacular because it’s only in the 2-3 feet range.

Regardless, day one did produce some great performances headed up by Filipe Toledo who is looking for a very unique three-peat victory at Jeffreys Bay.

The wave, regardless of the size, is perfect for Toledo, who is probably the fastest surfer we have ever seen.

If there’s one surfer who maybe can upset Toledo in these types of waves it is our own Julian Wilson.

Wilson has had a poor start to the season by his standards but he is starting to find form and his Round 1 heat win has me thinking he’s a real chance to win at Jeffreys Bay.

And if he does he’s back in proper contention for the world title.

Wilson has never won at J-Bay but he did make the 2015 final, which had to be cancelled after a shark attacked former world champion Mick Fanning. I’m sure Wilson feels this is an event he deserves to win.

Checking the weather maps and swell charts relevant to Jeffreys Bay it could be that we’ll have a number of days off as they wait for some decent larger surf, which is forecast well into late next week where hopefully they’ll run finals.

Big or small, Jeffreys Bay is still a great wave to watch. Four-day surf forecast: It’s been small and close to unsurfable for a number of days but that is about to change in a big way as some serious storm swells head our way. Look for increasing small waves today reaching 4 feet by day’s end and then be ready for rapid building large swells right through tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday with strong westerly winds. Experienced surfers might find some very large rideable surf.
