Galaxy to reward youngsters

- RYAN REYNOLDS

COACH Samuel Young says there is not one place in Galaxy United’s starting XI that is safe as the club looks to finish the WNPL season strongly.

A developing United will host Heidelberg United at the Leisuretime Centre on Sunday and Young is likely to reward a number of the club’s under-19s with game time.

Galaxy has been struggling since May, taking one point from its past seven matches.

Young hopes rewarding some of the club’s young talent can put the club on a path to success in 2020.

“We will certainly be giving opportunities to some of the 19s. They have trained very well with the seniors, so there will be spots up for grabs,” he said.

“Everyone’s spot is up for grabs depending on how they perform. It’s first-team football, so if you don’t play well, don’t perform, you will struggle to get into the starting XI.

“We have got to start rewarding the younger players. They are the future of the club so we want to introduce them to the senior environment sooner rather than later.”

United was better defensively in last week’s 1-0 loss to Box Hill, giving it confidence it can secure an upset against Heidelberg.

Heidelberg has managed to secure three points out of a possible 15 from its past five matches.

“It's another big test for our girls. (Heidelberg) are certainly going to go into the game as favourite based on ladder position,” Young said.

“We will go into it fancying ourselves. We are both in poor form, aren’t we? I think it will be a close game.”
