CAR CHASE ENDS WITH BIG BANG

- HARRISON TIPPET

A POLICE car was destroyed in a dramatic end to a chase through Geelong yesterday.

Two officers and a Corio man were taken to hospital after a short pursuit in Waurn Ponds about 3.30pm, with some of the chase taking part on the wrong side of the road.

“Investigators observed a red Subaru WRX sedan in the Waurn Ponds area about 3.25pm and were keen to speak to the driver about reports of alleged erratic behaviour at an address earlier in the day,’’ Victoria Police spokeswoman Kelly Grindley said.

“The driver failed to stop for police and continued driving on Colac Road.

“A short pursuit was initiated on Colac Road and the offending vehicle was observed travelling on to the wrong side of the road.

“The offending vehicle then crashed into a marked police car and the offender was arrested at the scene.”

The driver of the Subaru, from Corio, was taken to hospital under police guard, and would be interviewed at a later date, Ms Grindley said.

Residents took to social media to describe seeing a police chase through Waurn Ponds, ending on the Ring Road.

“Police chase through Waurn Ponds ending on the Highway, hope the police involved are OK,” Sharon Foster posted to Facebook.

“Police car was badly damaged, pushed the guy into the wires on the side of the road.”

Ambulance Victoria confirmed they had attended, but declined to give any information, directing the Geelong Advertiser to Victoria Police.
