Ammos aim to ‘tidy up’ form

GEELONG AMATEUR coach Kane Tenace concedes his team has been playing below its best for the past month but says he is confident a few minor tweaks can turn things around quickly.

The Ammos are coming off a 53-point loss to Anglesea, which followed narrow victories against three teams out of the finals race in Queenscliff (six points), Ocean Grove (two points) and Newcomb (six).

Despite the loss to the Roos, the Ammos still sit on top of the table with three rounds remaining in the BFL season, and Tenace said he felt they were close to getting back to their best form.

“We are definitely not playing our best footy,” Tenace said. “We have played in patches over the previous month and on the weekend Anglesea put some very good pressure on us and we didn’t play very good footy at all.

“So we definitely haven’t been at our best but I don’t think we are too far off, it is just a couple of little things that we need to tidy up and touch wood we will be back to where we need to be.”

Geelong Amateur faces third-placed Modewarre on Saturday and with Barwon Heads (second) taking on Anglesea (fourth), another loss would see it slip from top spot.

Tenace said while there would be some focus on the Warriors and their array of talented players, his main concern was seeing Ammos get back to playing the style of footy they were playing earlier in the year. “I just think it is about our boys regaining a little bit of confidence in the game plan and keeping on backing our ability and that our game plan is good enough to beat the good sides, which it has proven to be, especially in the first half of the year,” he said.

“So for us it is about getting back to playing our style of footy. It is mostly about us and doing what we need to do.

“They (Modewarre) are a very good side and have some very good players, so we will have a little look at what they do and what they do well.

“My point to the boys this week is that we have played up to that standard of footy before, and we played really well against them last time we played them, so it is about recognising that and trying as much as possible to replicate the way we played.”
