Interim coaches a Shaw thing

- WITH BILLY BROWNLESS AND DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

DAMO: Well Billy, Rhyce Shaw won the race for the Roos job. BIILY: How many years?

DAMO: It sounds like he’s starting with two with the option of a third if all goes well.

BILLY: Yeah that’s interesting.

DAMO: The other interesting news was that the Roos would be paying out Brad Scott’s $800,000 contract next year if he can’t find a job.

BILLY: Which will hurt them! They would have thought for sure that he’d be getting a job and I dare say Scotty would have thought he’d be getting a job too. But the interim coaches have been bloody good, haven’t they? All three of them.

DAMO: Yeah, well what’s David Teague? 5-2 from seven games and the two losses under a kick.

BILLY: And Brett Ratten’s 2-0 and they’ve kicked over 100. They hadn’t kicked over 100 for a year!

DAMO: We probably all thought for a while that Brett Ratten was hard done by at Carlton.

BILLY: Yeah, I reckon the two biggest hard-done-by coaches have been Brett Ratten and Guy McKenna at the Suns.

DAMO: Everything you heard out of Hawthorn while Ratten was there alongside Clarkson was that Ratten had a fair impact on the way they were going too.

BILLY: Yeah that’s right. Good on him and I think most people say you’re a better coach second time around.

DAMO: What did you make of the Cats on the weekend, just got the job done in third gear?

BILLY: They were in third gear and I think they probably went to fourth in the second half. There’s still two or three gears to go but there were some good signs with Tim Kelly getting more of it and Tomahawk firing up and Blicavs was good.

DAMO: It was probably good to see them get a few new guys into the team too, like Scott Selwood, and we might see Quinton Narkle get a crack soon, too.

BILLY: Yeah, I’d like to see him. He was very good in the VFL a couple of weeks ago. He was hard plus he runs. They couldn’t play him at Sydney because the ground was too small, but they’ll certainly look at him on bigger grounds. You’d think Gary Rohan comes in with his run too.

DAMO: And Tuohy got rested too, so there’s probably a good chance over the next few weeks to rest a couple of other players as well.

BILLY: Even those first-yearers, they’ve played nearly every game.

DAMO: How important is that balance between experience and youth in finals? BILLY: Very important. There’s some experienced boys there, we know that, but the Jordan Clarks, get it and take them on, and Gryan Miers kicking important goals when needed. But it’s also important to have a good squad of 26-27. Our only worry is the ruck. I don’t know what they’ll go with this week but it would be nice to have a Brad Ottens there.
