Ammos elated over late surge

- LACHIE YOUNG BFNL

CHAMPION Geelong Amateur defender Carly Post says her team’s two-goal victory against Modewarre highlighted its mental strength in the heat of battle.

Down by three goals with just minutes to play, Ammos found a way to get over the line against the Warriors and in the process solidify their position in second spot on the BFNL ladder.

“We beat them by 25 goals last time we played, and that was probably the best game we have ever played against them, but this time they had a mental edge early, especially defensively,” Post said.

“We really struggled to get it into our goalers and their defensive pressure was amazing all day. We tried a few different combinations just to get it right but we kept our cool, because they went up by three goals with four minutes left and we snatched it from them. So it was really positive for us and a really big mental win for us.”

Post was playing just her second game back after a medial ligament injury forced her to miss more than six weeks for Ammos.

The dual-sport specialist — Post also plays for Geelong Amateur’s women’s football team — said she was feeling fine after a lengthy lay-off.

“I was a little bit worried about my match fitness but I actually feel better than I did, which is a little bit weird,” she said.

“I have spent a lot of time in the gym trying to keep my quads and hammies going and trying not to lose any muscle, so I am feeling really strong.

“It wasn’t great to be out for six weeks but netball into football helps with the ability to read the game. They are very complementary and I am loving it.”

Post will play in a preliminary final for Ammos in the football this weekend, backing up from her netball team’s clash against Drysdale on Saturday.
