Galaxy coach: We played better than the losing 4-2 score card

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

GEELONG Galaxy United coach Samuel Young has lauded his players despite being outclassed in a 4-2 loss to South Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday.

Galaxy outplayed the home side in the first half to lead 1-0 at the break, with Caitlin Pickett punishing South Melbourne on the counter-attack.

But South brought more intensity in the second half, scoring two quick goals and adding a third, before Kanna Oda struck back to close the margin at 3-2.

But in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser, Galaxy was opened up on the counter-attack, with South Melbourne sealing a 4-2 win.

“It was another good performance,” Young said.

“They weren’t really causing our defence many problems (in the first half) and we got one, probably should have had another going into the half-time break. Second half they came at us really strong and they broke through. It was just some individual brilliance from Cindy Lay, two or three goals from range and that’s how they broke us.”

Young said the scoreline didn’t fairly depict his side’s efforts. “The last 10 minutes we wanted to throw everyone forward and they got us on the counter attack for 4-2,” he said.

“It was a flattering score, to be honest, I think it wasn’t a 4-2 game on how both of the teams performed but South Melbourne had that edge in the final third and quality players will do that to us.”

Galaxy, eighth, faces seventhplaced Bayside United in a winnable game this Saturday.
