SEX ASSAULT PROBE

REVEALED: Police investigate new claims against doc

- HARRISON TIPPET

POLICE have revealed they are investigating multiple new sexual assault claims against a Bellarine GP as a legal practice urges further potential victims to come forward.

Adviceline Injury Lawyers have appealed for former patients of Ocean Grove GP Dr Shafiul Milky to tell their stories, after he was banned from any contact with female patients by the national medical watchdog in March.

Victoria Police yesterday revealed more alleged incidents had since been reported, with the claims now spanning a seven-year period. The Geelong Advertiser is not suggesting the allegations are true, only that they have been made.

POLICE have revealed they are investigating multiple new sexual assault claims against a Bellarine GP as a legal practice urges further potential victims to come forward.

Adviceline Injury Lawyers have appealed for former patients of Ocean Grove GP Shafiul Milky to tell their stories after he was banned from any contact with female patients by the national medical watchdog in March.

In June, the Geelong Advertiser revealed police were investigating the doctor, with the Geelong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team confirming police were probing two alleged sexual assaults linked to a GP in the Ocean Grove area — with the latest reported incident happening in February.

Yesterday, Victoria Police revealed more alleged incidents had since been reported, with the claims now spanning a seven-year period.

“Geelong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are continuing their investigation into a number of sexual assaults that are alleged to be linked to a general practitioner in the Ocean Grove area,” Sgt Cameron Scott said.

“A number of further incidents have been reported and will be investigated.

“The incidents date back seven years, with the most recent reported incident occurring this year.”

The Geelong Advertiser is not suggesting the allegations are true, only that they have been made.

The Advertiser was told he was “not available” for comment by Peninsula Family Medical Practice.

Adviceline Injury Lawyers have said they are exploring legal recourse for at least one former patient of the doctor.

Dr Milky was investigated for misconduct-related allegations by the Medical Board of Australia and AHPRA in 2015, but was not placed under gender-based and practicebased restrictions until March this year, an Adviceline statement notes.

Adviceline managing partner Bree Knoester said the alleged incidents following 2015 could have been avoided.

“It is disappointing that we continue to have doctors investigated for inappropriate practices and permitted to continue practising without restriction with the result being that more patients are put at risk,” Ms Knoester said.

The medical board put conditions on Dr Milky this year, including “gender-based restrictions” enforced by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

AHPRA currently lists the Peninsula Family Medical Practice in Ocean Grove as the only “approved practice location” for Dr Milky.

The conditions also say he “must not have any contact with female patients”.

Dr Milky’s registration is due to expire on September 30.
