Abfalter takes out top gong

GEELONG Amateur ruck Stephanie Abfalter has capped a stunning season, winning the Division 1 women’s senior best and fairest.

Abfalter, who will line up for Ammos in Sunday’s preliminar­y final against Geelong West Giants, claimed a thrilling vote count at Buckley’s Entertainm­ent Centre last night.

Abfalter was nine votes behind with four rounds to play, but stormed home to claim the trophy. She polled 19 votes, beating St Mary’s star Kate Collins, who finished on 18.

Collins’s teammate Ashleigh Bond topped the goalkickin­g leaderboar­d, booting 22 goals for the season.

Abfalter (ruck), Collins (interchang­e) and Bond (fullforwar­d) were all named in the Team of the Year, coached by Ammos’ Tim McGrath.

In Division 2, North Geelong’s Charlotte Thorne claimed back-to-back crowns.

Thorne was a runaway winner in the vote count, polling 27 votes to finished ahead of Drysdale’s Gabrielle Deller, who attracted 13 votes.

Hawk Melissa Egan, who slotted 56 goals for the season, won the Division 2 goalkickin­g award.

Thorne was named on-ball in the Team of the Year, while Deller was selected on a wing and Egan on the half-forward flank.

Taiya Morrow won the under-18 Division 1 women’s best and fairest by one vote. The Lara Jenkins star polled 16 votes to beat St Joseph’s 1 playmaker Stephanie Williams.

Geelong Amateur’s Lucy Were won the goalkickin­g trophy with 27 majors.

South Barwon Walerys gun Tamara Sferco won the under-18 Division 2 women’s best and fairest. Sferco polled 16 votes to beat St Albans King’s Analea McKee by one vote.

St Albans’ Tayla Sanford was the leading goalkicker with 29 goals for the season.
