SNOWY FORECAST

- JACOB GRAMS

SNOW could fall in the Otways this week as the Geelong region turns chilly and high winds make it even more uncomfortable.

A series of fronts are set to whip up rain and strong winds for the next week, sending “feels like” temperatures plummeting to single figures.

While morning temperatures are expected to be about average for this time of year, predicted tops of just 11C and 12C will be well below the August average, compounded by strong winds to make conditions seems extra icy.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said it was likely a severe weather warning would be issued for tomorrow and Friday, due to the threat of damaging winds with gusts of 90110km/h.

“We have two strong cold fronts approaching us later in the week and we’ll see the first of those early on Thursday and that will unleash a cold westerly airstream across the state,” Mr Carlyon said.

“I certainly think there will be a chance of snow (in the Otways) during Friday morning.

“It’s touch and go. It depends on where the moisture is when the coldest air is over them, but it’s certainly the best chance of snow we’ve seen there all winter.”

At ground level in Geelong, Mr Carlyon said wind chill would be the big reason for the bite in the air.

“It’s going to feel very much like low single-figures temperatures, and when you get some gusts come through, the apparent temperature will probably go negative on Friday and Saturday.”
