Stadium plan for Surf Coast sports

Council hopes $11.6m facility will be open late next year

- OLIVIA REED

AN $11.6 million indoor recreation centre on the Surf Coast could soon become a reality, under a council planning application.

The proposed stadium would be built on the Surf Coast Secondary School site in Torquay and an additional carparking area would be laid out on a Surf Coast Shire Council reserve.

The Surf Coast multipurpose stadium would provide space for basketball, netball, futsal, badminton, volleyball and other sporting and community uses.

“All of the existing sports fields and pitches will be retained, and the stadium will be constructed to the north of the existing Narrodya netball courts,” a Glossop Town Planning report read.

“The use and management of the facility will be established through a 50-year joint use agreement between council and the Department of Education and Training.”

The key features of the proposal include: THREE additional indoor courts; ADDITIONAL change facilities, storage, administrative and multi-purpose rooms; SPECTATOR area including basic seating for 200 people and temporary seating for 400 people; and CAFE and kitchen.

The facility would be available for school use from 8am-4.30pm Monday to Friday, but could be used for graduation ceremonies, school plays or a parent information night, the planning report read.

During school hours two multi-purpose courts would be available for public use as well as from 8am-9pm weekdays and Saturday, and Sunday from 8am-5pm.

The development will provide an additional 67 car parking spaces and 20 bicycle parking spaces.

“Council has identified the benefits of physical activity and that participation in sport and recreation is a fundamental way to improve the physical and mental health of individuals,” the report read.

“The delivery of the stadium is one of the commitments of the Torquay Jan Juc Development Contributions Plan 2011 and will serve current and future population growth in the municipality over the next decade.”

In May, the council said the development was expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Council resolved in December 2017 to transfer an estimated 3176sq m of council-owned land to the Victorian Department of Education and Training to create a single land title.

The planning report said the State and Federal governments had provided $8 million for the project.

A decision on the development will not be made until September 5.
