TIGERS TURN UP SCORING POWER

- Josh CONWAY

HOW scary is Colac’s scoring power? The Tigers are motoring and have won 11 games in a row — and their firepower has a lot to do with it.

In the past five weeks, their goal tallies have read 18.17, 25.12, 20.9, 21.8 and 24.20. Three of those scores have come against good sides in Newtown & Chilwell, St Mary’s and South Barwon too.

You don’t need to look much further than Saturday’s match against Newcomb to see how crucial Jordan Erskine is to Anglesea’s premiership hopes. The star forward, who has 90 goals for the season, booted six out of the Roos’ nine. Anglesea’s past few wins have actually come without Erskine dominating, but on Saturday, they simply wouldn’t have won without him.

After weeks and weeks of guessing and wearing out the ladder predictor, we finally have a set BFL top five. Drysdale’s loss to Geelong Amateur ensured there would be no change to the top five. Ammos, Anglesea, Barwon Heads, Torquay and Modewarre all have a chance at premiership glory.

Noble gestures don’t come much greater than what Lara captain Matt Spence is doing. The Cats’ skipper will continue to wear his TAC Towards Zero jumper for the rest of the season in a show of support for his club. Three Lara players have been affected by road trauma this season and Spence wants to continue to show support by donning zero on his back. Bravo.

Three rounds ago Drysdale was second on the BFL ladder. Today, the Hawks are officially out of the finals race. Just how did it happen? A combination of a lack of confidence, form and injuries have all played their part, but it is a huge disappointment for the Hawks, whose off-season recruiting and start to the season promised so much.

South Barwon may not come under as much scrutiny as Drysdale, but the Swans’ season is no less staggering.

Injuries and form have played their part for the Swans too, but a seventh-placed finish after a semi-final appearance in 2018 and an off-season of targeted recruiting is a little underwhelming. Did they overachieve last season? Either way, they’ve fallen short.

Unfortunately, it was another Battle of the Bridge fizzer on Saturday. One of the marquee games in the region didn’t reach any great heights this season. Barwon Heads defeated Ocean Grove by 85 points in Round 10 and the margin was 60 points on the weekend. Disappointing for the neutral supporter.

How tough were conditions on Saturday? It certainly felt like winter, and the scoring suffered. Four GFL teams kicked five goals or less alone.
