AMMOS FIND FINALS FORM

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

A RETURN to form has left Geelong Amateur coach Kane Tenace confident his side’s best football will stack up in September.

Ammos simply looked a class above against Drysdale at KFC Oval on Saturday — stronger around the footy, quicker on the outside and structurally sounder around the ground.

Their defensive set-ups particularly impressed, as they picked up countless intercept marks around the half-back line, stopping the Hawks from gaining any sort of momentum.

It is one part of Ammos’ game that Tenace said must continue to click if they are to impact in finals.

“I think when we’re playing well, the way we defend and win the contested ball around the ground, I think that’s good September footy,” he said.

“But if we’re even a little bit off or either of those parts of our game are off then obviously, the way that the competition is, sides can take advantage of it pretty quickly.

“We’ve got to be on in those two areas to win finals.

“Obviously last week we played really well and it was just pleasing to continue on.

“We knew they were going to come out hard, which they did early, and it was pleasing from pretty much quarter-time onwards we started to control the game.”

Key forward Mitch Day kicked seven goals, while Jarrod Garth booted five goals at the other end for Drysdale after tweaking his quad before the first bounce.

Harry Kershaw received Tenace’s praise for his return to form, while Sam Hosking booted two goals — his workrate a highlight up forward.

“After a few ordinary weeks, we’ve been able to bounce back and go back to playing the style of footy we’ve trained for over the summer,” Tenace said.

“The boys haven’t lost confidence. They’ve been able to keep attacking and keep playing the game style that we wanted.

“Obviously it was mentioned before the game about being able to lock in a double chance, so it’s pleasing we’ve been able to play the way we did today.”

Daniel Lovick was rested with soreness but will face Barwon Heads in their final-round clash this Saturday.

“It’s always a big game against Barwon Heads,” Tenace said.

“Before the season you sat down and thought they were probably the benchmark for the league and I don’t think that’s changed too much from our point of view.

“Obviously it is a big game. They’re trying to get a topthree spot themselves and us with a win we can seal top spot, so there’s plenty on the line.”
