State’s top clubman is at Torquay

- JACOB GRAMS

MANY would describe him as the backbone of The Sands Torquay Golf Club, and now golf operations manager Frank Myers has his deserved accolade as the best clubman in the state.

Myers was presented as club employee of the year at the Golf Management Victoria awards last week, with judges noting his strong work ethic and exemplary customer service skills in the past 12 months.

A humble Myers said he always tried to exceed expectations for any member or visitor to the club to make their experience better.

“It’s good to be recognised for the job you do, I guess. I just try to be myself and treat everyone the same. No job is beneath me, I just do what needs to be done,” he said.

But Myers went above and beyond during one of the club’s toughest times as they farewelled Jarrod Lyle.

“I actually went and saw him a week before he went and he actually asked for me, so it was an honour to see him before he went. That was pretty tough,” he said.

“Getting his service organised last year, we all pulled together and it was a massive couple of months, and we didn’t have a manager at the time either.”

Myers said Lyle’s positivity in the face of adversity, and the attitude of The Sands’ former manager Peter Nolan in the face of his health battles, inspired him to go above and beyond every day.

“I’ve had both of those guys to look up to, and took a bit of inspiration from them to keep doing what you’re doing, because you could always be in a worse situation,” he said.

Myers was the driving force behind developing an Order of Merit in honour of former Geelong club captain Cam Muller and promoting the growing Black Tee Series to diversify the competition offering.
