Nominations flow for legend status

- Melbourne vs Sydney, Friday night, MCG

When scheduling, AFL honchos figured both would be finals-bound. But both are digesting tough campaigns, leaving this prime-time fixture without appeal. The Swans (15th) and Demons (17th) have won just 11 games between them. VOTING has opened as part of the Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards, recognising the tireless efforts of volunteers across four categories.

Viva Energy received a whopping 90 nominations for the awards on the back of the new Trailblazer categories in a bid to mark the feats of young people making a difference at their clubs. The list has been whittled down to 15 finalists, who will be in the running for a share of $55,000 in prizes.

People’s Choice Awards winners will win up to $2500 for themselves and their club.

The Female Trailblazer Award finalists are Phoebe Mitchell (Geelong Swimming), Jesse Sutton (Ocean Grove FNC) and Sarah Naylor (Geelong West Giants).

Male Trailblazer Awards nominees are Michael Trewhella (Drysdale Football Club), Rohan Greaves (Geelong Touch Football) and Keli’I Zablan (Geelong Baycats).

Female Club Legend finalists include Jenny Page (Alexander Thomson CC), Lorraine Kulic (Lara Giants) and Vicky McElligott (Geelong Netball).

Six finalists are up for the Male Club Legend Award, with Gerard Wakefield (East Belmont CC), Cliff Grinter (St Albans FC), Rick Scade (FC Leopold), Fred Forssman (Barwon Special Olympics), Jai Smith (Geelong Dragons), Allen McKee (Try Boys Basketball).
