‘WE BELIEVE’

Cameron: Geelong holds no fears for Lions

- RYAN REYNOLDS

BRISBANE star Charlie Cameron says his side won’t take a backwards step when they host ladder leader Geelong in what could be a finals-defining blockbuster.

Both sides head into Saturday afternoon’s clash at the Gabba tied on 60 points, with the winner a strong chance to secure a top-two finish and a home final.

The Cats could also go a step towards securing the minor premiership with victory, playing Carlton in the final round of the home and away season.

The match has extra significance for Brisbane too, with the Lions travelling to Melbourne in Round 23 to play an in-form Richmond.

Back-to-back losses would put its top-four hopes in danger with Collingwood still a chance to jump in from fifth.

But Cameron said Brisbane’s eyes were set firmly on the Cats, with the underrated Lions keen to make a statement against the competition’s best.

“There’s a lot of confidence (within the group). It’s going to be a tough game against the number one side,” Cameron said.

“It‘s going to be interesting (to see) how we handle it.

“But I think there is a lot of belief there and it keeps growing, so we have just got to enjoy it (playing in the big games).

“It (playing Geelong) is going to set us up, because that’s the way finals footy is played against a good side. Contested ball, we have to be on top of our game, they’ve got some star players there. It’s going to be interesting.”

Brisbane has been one of the surprise packets this season, jumping from 15th last year to be in contention for the minor premiership with two rounds remaining.

Cameron said he believed the Lions were still underdogs this season despite them winning all of their past eight matches. “We are underdogs at the moment … but inside the football club we know how good we are and how good we can be,” he said.

“If we come with the process of winning our share of the ball and playing our way, we look damaging.

“It’s enjoyable (being seen as an underdog). We want to be unpredictable when we are playing against the good teams. It is what it is, but we know how good we are.”
